Course details
Name: ENGL - 116
Title: WORLD LITERATURE: THE COMING OF AGE THEME
Section: 05
Semester: Spring - 2024
Credits: 3
Description:
Our Languages, Ourselves.
The extent to which we have the freedom to express ourselves in the language(s) and language varieties of our choice and on our own terms, says a great deal about the positions we occupy in society. World literature, if, when and how it has been translated, says just as much about power on a global scale. Developing, shaping and coming into one’s own language(s); translating ourselves to others, interpreting others and their language(s); writing across borders and languages; literature, translation and power; language barriers – real and imagined ; and, “untranslatable” terms, all these themes will shape the lens through which we read and interpret texts by authors from around the world in this course about growing up, and into, ourselves. *This course includes an oral history component on language identities and community.*
The authors we'll cover will be selected from:
- Coming of Age Around the World. A Multicultural Anthology edited by Faith Aele and Mary Frosch
- In Other Words by Jhumpa Lahiri
- Into the Widening World. International Coming-of-Age Stories edited by John Loughery
- The Milk of Almonds edited by Louise De Salvo and Edvige Giunta
