Description:
This on-site, face-to-face course focuses on American poetry of the Modern period and explores the work of poets who helped establish and nurture American Modernism. We begin with Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson and soon afterward, trace the sometimes-tenuous lineage of the modern American voice through the works of such poets as: Edna St. Vincent Millay, Marianne Moore, Robert Frost, e.e. Cummings, Amy and Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Bishop, and end with T.S. Eliot. Students will keep a response journal and will write one formal, final essay.
