Name: ENGL - 229

Title: AMERICAN LITERATURE II: 1890-PRESENT

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
This survey course will start by examining American realism as a response to Victorianism. We will trace how realism was challenged by Modernism and how postmodernism revised that forerunner. We will focus primarily on fiction and poetry that exemplifies elements of these artistic movements, while also attending to the specifics of each literary work. Students will read a diversity of writers (drawing from some of these famous writers--Henry James, Edith Wharton, Langston Hughes, Sherman Alexie, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Kathy Acker, Phillip Roth, Junot Diaz, David Foster Wallace, and many others).
