Description:
This course surveys the history of American film from its origins to the end of World War II. We will study the rise of cinema as a mass culture form and the development of the studio system with its reliance on genre production and the star system. We will also consider documentary filmmaking in the 1930s/1940s, examples of studio animation and the experiments of the pre-WWII film avant-garde. Films to be screened might include Grand Hotel, Duck Soup, Babes in Arms, Angels with Dirty Faces, Dance, Girl, Dance, My Darling Clementine, among others. Weekly readings in film history and essay exams will be required.
