So many students are intimidated by poetry - or believe they "just don't get it." But don't you love poetry? Didn't you love it - at some point?
Nursery rhymes? Jump-rope chants? Tongue-twisters?
And don't you know a few hip-hop songs by heart?
Isn't this poetry?
Let's re-discover the joys - and the mysteries - of poetic language!
We will discuss the music and the imaginative tools of poetry.
Students will become more sophisticated readers and listeners: metaphor, point of view, meter, rhyming - these are just a few of the aspects of poetic language that we will talk about.
This course will help any student who finds poetry a bit intimidating, and for those students who already find much delight in poetry, this course will enrich your understanding of poetic craft.
Most of our writing assignments will be done during class.
