Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2024

Description:
This course explores poetry, drama, prose fiction and non-fiction from one of the most intellectually, politically, and spiritually tumultuous periods in English cultural history. Poetry from sonnet to epic, utopian fiction, political manifestos, and drama reflect a unique kind of revolutionary age - one that revived the distant past to invent new futures. Among other topics, we will look at changing ideas about sex and gender roles, citizenship, colonialism, class and social mobility, religious controversies sparked by the Protestant Revolution, and new scientific and technological discoveries that changed the way people understood the universe, the world, and their places in it. Authors include Sidney, Spenser, Herbert, Donne, Marlowe, Marvell, Hutchinson, and Shakespeare.
