Title: INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE: THE SHORT STORY
Section: 04
Semester: Fall - 2024
Credits: 3
Description:
This course focuses on the short story, a versatile form that every region and era makes its own. We’ll look at narrative technique in a gamut of authors ranging from Katherine Mansfield and James Joyce to George Saunders and ZZ Packer. Through in-class discussion and responses, we’ll examine not just what a story means but also the nature of its creativity and how it accomplishes its effects. To further develop both critical and rhetorical skills, students will complete two brief essays, a midterm, and a final exam.
This course meets the women and gender studies (3C) requirement for the English major, as well as the Gen Ed (C2) literature requirement.
