Course details

Name: ENGL - 210

Title: MYTH AND LITERATURE

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
What did the ancients believe about their gods, and how did they register those beliefs in forms like the epic and the drama? We will explore these questions by beginning with the oldest European stories about gods and mortals by Homer and Hesiod. After a turn to Greek drama (with Euripides) and Roman epic (with Ovid), we will read several non-classical mythological works, including African myths, the Chinese adventure story "Journey to the West," and the most ancient long story of them all, the Mesopotamian epic "Gilgamesh." At the end of the term we'll read Madeline Miller's recent novel "Circe," which reimagines classical myth from the point of view of the famous witch-goddess of Aeaea. Assignments will include two mid-length essays, two exams, and some quizzes.
