Course details

Name: ENGL - 560

Title: MODERN AMERICAN FICTION

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
Willa Cather argued that the "world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts." Writers in the twentieth century struggled with what modernism and modernity meant and how to deal with broader changes in American culture at this time. This course will explore some texts often considered canonical, as well as others by authors whose contributions have been historically underrepresented. Writers to be studied may include Cather, Dos Passos, Ellison, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Petry, Smith, Stein, Steinbeck, and Wharton. We will analyze representations of ethnicity, gender, and race, and we will also place works in their historical context.
