Title: SPECIAL TOPIC IN CREATIVE WRITING: FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION

Section: 02

Semester: Fall - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
This writing workshop aims to guide students—as readers and writers—through the labyrinths of fantasy and science fiction. What is a metaphor? How do you spot the difference between a trope and an archetype? Is it okay to have both zombies and unicorns in our story? How can we use language to help readers learn how to read—and so be more artfully moved—by our stories? From day one, we will be calling forth those parts of fiction and life that inspire, baffle, and astound us. We will encounter work from across the multiverse of storytelling, including selections from some of the earliest imaginative traditions, right next to more contemporary work from the likes of Kelly Link, Sofia Samatar, Haruki Murakami, and Ted Chiang. Students will complete brief weekly journal prompts and in-class exercises, in addition to the workshopping, writing, and revision of two complete short stories. In so doing, students will cultivate a better sense of how to navigate the craft of character, plot, and metaphor, alongside a deeper faith in the thread and compass of their own hearts.
