Name: ENGL - 315

Title: AMERICAN INDIAN THEMES

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
"Turtle Island," or North America, emerged on the back of a sea turtle out of a mass of water, the Haudenosaunee (hoe-dee-no-SHOW-nee) say, that offered Skywoman a respite from her fall. This course delves deeply into the narrative traditions of "Turtle Island," exploring Native American literature and Indigenous storytelling from disruptive oral trickster figures to Louise Erdrich and Stephen Graham Jones. Reflecting the limitations of written texts, we will also look at how tattoos, wampum belts, baskets, hide painting and leger art tell extraordinary stories in non-alphabetic ways.
