Course details
Name: ENGL - 384
Title: THE GRAMMARS OF ENGLISH
Section: 41
Semester: Winter - 2024
Credits: 3
Description:
Course Unofficial Subtitle: The Voyage of Communication
This course analyzes the broader concepts of language, asking such questions as: Why does grammar exist? What makes grammar correct or incorrect? How did American English grammar evolve? Is there logic in grammar? Will understanding our habits help us to understand our language more intuitively? We will analyze the nuances of language and deconstruct a lot of the preconceived notions about what we believe English to be.
in the second phase of the course, we practically attempt to achieve mastery of current usage, focusing on those concepts socially agreed upon as “proper,” “formal” and “stylistic.” How do we, as writers, readers and speakers of English, balance our understanding of prescriptive grammar while allowing for an understanding that language also has a descriptive function?
Our ultimate goal for the course is to re-envision language as an organic, fluid concept that can confound, enlighten, and even entertain us.
