The College of the Arts (CART) Office of Career Services at Montclair State University provides high-quality career-focused advising, educational programming, and related services to College of the Arts students that help them leverage their creative talents into successful and rewarding careers. Reporting to the Director of CART Career Services, the CART Career Advisor will support the director in the development of meaningful cooperative education and internship opportunities; providing individual career counseling services, resume reviews, and group workshops and presentations; and working closely with a culturally diverse population of faculty and students to support career preparation, employment opportunities, employer development and events. The Career Advisor will also cooperate with the college’s academic advisors and student services team through special projects and possibly providing advising support during peak-advisement periods, under the leadership of the Assistant Dean.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide expert, industry-specific, career advising/counseling to students in both individual and group-based settings. This includes career assessment and exploration, decision-making, resume improvement, job/internship search strategies, interviewing skills, job offer evaluation, salary negotiation, graduate school planning, and professional tools and correspondence (cover letter, personal statement, professional portfolio, LinkedIn, etc.).
• Help coordinate a robust cooperative education (“co-op”) program, including: meeting with a caseload of students and co-op faculty; processing all forms; and giving students permits (through Banner software) for the co-op course appropriate for their major.
• Work closely with Director of Career Services to build strong relationships with Chairs, Directors, and faculty across the four schools/ departments of the College of the Arts to form collaborative partnerships that increase the presence of academically embedded career education and programming in all majors.
• Collaborate with the Director of Career Services to create opportunities for students to explore career fields, develop professional contacts, and build marketable experience by networking with relevant recruiters, employer contacts, and College alumni. Support the director with employer relations.
• Help plan and implement multiple career-related events, workshops and classroom presentations each semester on topics related to job and internship search strategies and the career development process. Build alumni and peer mock interview programs.
• Collaborate with the College of the Arts Web & Digital Content Manager to regularly evaluate and update the department’s webpage. Promote programming through posting to social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and circulating announcements.
• Support student clubs and organizations by collaborating with relevant student and staff leaders to provide tailored career programing and networking event opportunities.
• Help manage student and employer accounts and approve internship and job postings in Symplicity software.
• Assist in supervising student workers (where applicable) who support the overall efforts of the Career Services office.
